Instructions
- Position the rack in the center of the oven and preheat it to 325°F (165°C). Grease a 20cm (8-inch) square baking dish and line the bottom with parchment paper, allowing some to hang over the edges.
- In a bowl, combine the Graham cracker crumbs with flour and baking powder.
- In another bowl, whisk together the brown sugar and egg. Add the milk and oil, mixing well. Incorporate the dry ingredients and stir until the batter is smooth. Pour this mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese with the flour using an electric mixer until smooth. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating until fully blended. Pour in the maple syrup and sour cream, mixing well.
- Spread the cream cheese filling over the baked layer. Continue baking for an additional 18 minutes. The center should still be slightly wobbly. Allow to cool for 1 hour, then refrigerate for 2 hours or until fully chilled. Optionally, cover and freeze at this stage.
- To serve, use a spatula to evenly spread the maple butter over the cream cheese filling. Sprinkle with pecans and gently press them in. Cut into 9 squares. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

- 💡 Don’t have Graham cracker crumbs? You can substitute with digestive biscuits or even oreo crumbs for a different flavor profile. Just remember to adjust the sweetness accordingly.
- 💡 If you're short on time, mix the crust ingredients with a fork rather than blending separately. It won't be as finely crumbed, but will still work well.
- 💡 Add a sprinkle of cinnamon to the cream cheese layer for an extra depth of flavor—it pairs beautifully with maple syrup.
- 💡 Make these squares ahead of time and freeze them without the maple butter topping. Just thaw and top them before serving for a fresher taste.
- 💡 For a fun twist, try blending in some chocolate chips to the cream cheese mixture for an added richness. It pairs surprisingly well with maple!
- 💡 Using a mix of different nuts like walnuts or almonds can offer a unique flavor and texture to these squares.
- 💡 If you're looking to cut down on sugar, try reducing the brown sugar in the crust and keeping the maple syrup in the filling for that authentic flavor.
- 💡 These maple cream cheese squares pair perfectly with a cup of coffee or tea, making them an ideal choice for brunch or afternoon snacks.
